Rack question 95 cali 8v with p/s

Hi all my wife cali has a knocking coming from somewhere, now bazzv6er mentioned the rack maybe shot.
My question is this, if i grab the track rod control arms where they bolt on to the rack there is movement up and down, should this be the norm or does it sound like the rack has died.

how much play? Best way to tell would be to get the whole front end jacked up and then get someone to turn the steering wheel from lock to lock and look out for any unusual noises, could be a simple thing like a knackered or loose track rod end, mine knocked then i noticed a loose nut on the drivers side track end, tightened it and its been fine since...

I have a spare rack if you do require one...

cool ok m8 will try that, i think the rack i have is a ZF should that be of any use, will let you know on the rack soon as, live about 30 miles miles from you, how much for the rack?

I think the one I have is a ZF can double check if you do require it, will only want £25 for it...

but check that it is the rack first as its a bit of a pig of a job to change so only do it if need be...
