question for the computer people

by Fraz » Sat Jun 16, 2012 3:50 pm

my base Pc has somehow died in that it will start to power up get as far as the windows xp logo and then switch off

had a quick look and the fans on the power supply seem not to work, so I am guessing the thing is just switching off seeing as its not getting cooled enough or its detcting the fans not cutting in

anyway rather than muck about with it I was just wanting to get the stuff of the hard drive on there, so would something like this be ok for that ...not worried about fixing the pc as its old and its very slow

just remove the hdd from your old pc due to age it will have an ide connector so you can buy a caddy as in the link and run is as removable storage device

or if you have another older pc that has ide connectors fit it into that pc and run it as a slave drive and transfer stuff that way

bare in mind pics and documents will be at code level and stored in folders some under windows operating system

*********buy a new power supply there only 20 quid********* save yourself time and hastle

now using the old laptop which has a broken screen, so no point in getting a power supply for the old pc. Laptop is much better spec and much faster

bare in mind pics and documents will be at code level and stored in folders some under windows operating system

no idea what your on about with that ...do you mean I will not be able to access the pictures, documents etc from the hard drive

get the caddy it will work fine and be usefull later :) or give the disk to a mate to have them transferr stuff to DVD for you. :)

I would be surprised if the psu is overheating before you get pats the xp screen though from first boot from cold.. have you tried safe mode? holding f8 when you first boot up? could just be a corrupt driver trying to load.

does the same thing when I try boot from disk, safe mode or any other of the options

the pc is about 8 years old and and the ram etc is down IIRc its only 1.8ghz proccesor and 420 ram

laptop is far better spec

my idea was I could use the caddy and the hard drive for external storage for stuff I dont want on the laptops, I can always just plug it in when needed

I take it that one in the link above will do??

i have tried booting in safe mode......does the same thing and get to the windows Xp logo

tried it with the windows cd .............same thing

last knowing good configuration..............same thing

some times it will get a bit further or not as faswitch'switchs off almost straight away

TBh I am not that fussy what is wrong with it ..as all I want is to get the stuff off the hard drive
