Driver's door lock barrel badly worn. Options to fix it are.
My driver's door lock barrel is badly worn. It onlys locks on the 90 degree deadlock position. The normal 45 degree lock position doesnt work, and the window close function don't work either. When locked, the key hole position sits wonky (ie instead of being flat, it sits at an angle of about 20 degrees. So basically i need to do something to fix it.
As i see it i've got two options
1. The simple option - swap the drivers lock with the passenger lock
2. The advanced option - i've read you can get any other barrel dismantle it, and rearrange the tumblers (anyone done this?)
My first problem is i can't see how to remove the barrel from its metal backing plate? I've got a pair of mole grips around the barrel, and whilst there is about 1mm of play (ie there is movement) the barrel doesn't turn no matter how hard i try to turn it, so now i'm stuck. Am i missing something?
Tips and suggestions welcome!!!

from memory you remove the barrel from the aluminium backplate first ( I think its a twist and pull)
then you will have the barrel which will have a C clip at the back you slide this out carefully and the barrel will fall apart.
if you take the key out the tumblers will come out but be careful as there are small springs below the tumblers too if you take them out you will see they are numbered so line them up the way they came out and swap into another barrel.

I'd already done the C clip bit, i just couldnt' remove the barrel. I've since found you have to extract the small rivet/pin with a pair of mole grips or pliers, so the barrel itself is now removed.

Havn't got to this bit yet. I'm guessing its the tumblers that are worn on mine, so i need to make a new one ideally. I am hoping that i can make a matching lock out of an old lock from a different car, by re-arranging the tumblers.
Has anyone done this with success?
Can you take the tumblers off (after noting the positions) with the key still in place?

You cant take the tumblers out with the key in because the key goes throught the middle of the tumbler, you could simply record the numbers of each and try and get less worn ones but its a bit random so you might need multiple locks to get the right combination.
I did this with a boot lock once successfully it just takes some patience..

I got another lock with keys off ebay for about £10 a while ago.
Means you have different keys for the door and ignition which is a pain when in a dark place sometimes
