supermarket fuel vs vpower /fuel saver shell fuel query

by BazV6er » Tue Sep 06, 2011 10:52 am

Ok ive been looking into this just recent as ive had to drive the v6 a lot differently than before in a month just going from work and back .

now me and a work colleague have been speaking about this , last month as a oneoff i filled my tank with tescos fuel 95 ron for 61 quid (at 135.9 a ltr) and gave me a full tank while driving a constant 50-60mph in the country roads and the fuel computer was saying i was looking around 31mpg but as i got down to half a tank it only said ive only done 170miles on half a tank.

Now normally i use 95 ron fuelsaver from shell at 135.9 a ltr and normally found that by keeping to the same driving style for the v6 (i would love to be able to keep filling my tank but as im on a budget) i found the figure was a lot more.

ive been looking at the Vpower from shell (144.9 a ltr) this morning down at shell and have worked out this would cost me 10p a litre for whatever how many litres i put in the tank so lets say i put 60 pounds into the tank it will cost me 66 pounds rather than 60 pounds but with the Vpower does it really clean your engine and maybe give you a few extra MPG or is it just for performance as they say.

I found a fuel calculator :

I rounded it up and said I was doing 28MPG even tho the computer says its 31MPG and this would be how much it would cost me between the fuel saver and Vpower:

28MPG Fuel saver =320 miles just to go to work and back- 134.9ltr = 51trs (This journey would cost you £59.47

28MPG Vpower =320 miles just to go to work and back- 144.9ltr =51ltrs (I know this one will cost 6 quid more depending on how many ltr I put in) This journey would cost you £63.88

So is this really great stuff or just a gimmick

well all i know is the v6 doesnt like the tescos mixture so this month i will be going to flush some fuel injector cleaner into it with a tank of shell and maybe later on try the vpower

iv never had a problam with tesco's fuel, to be fair i cant say i see any diffrence in any of the fuels when driving at normial speeds, i think you are looking at it too hard it would be diffrent if you had a highly tunned v6 or let, i would say any diffrences you are finding are to do with driving style and road conditions and nothing to do with which fuel you are putting in

trust me steve ,its a different feeling to the normal shell 95 ron i normally use from shell (and a few others have also had the same problem so i will be getting back to shell from now on .

Even driving a lot slower gave like a pinking feeling tbh , whereas i had never had that problem from shell nor sainsburys or asda (just tesco)

i cant see why it would make your engine pink, if the tanks at the tesco where old and had water in them then that would cause you a problam, but as Robbie has said it might need a good services, when was it last done

im doing a oil change next month and thats under a year as all the other stuff has been done , i need to renew the ht leads soon but i wasnt having this issue when i was filling up from shell for mths only when tina said that if we get petrol from tescos we would get cash back on points etc it was all fine until i filled up with tescos .

But like i said i will wait till payday next week and fill up with the normal shell and see how it goes.

well i go where evers cheapest and never had any problems with any of them wither it's asda's, tesco's, shell or sainsbury's.
as Steve have already said unless its a turbo or highly modified n/a engine you shouldn't notice that much of a difference

well i put some fuel injector cleaner in with a tank of fuel saver 95 ron from shell and the car feels great now and im going to see how many miles to the gallon i can get from full down to a quarter and then i can see if i was right about the dirtyness of tescos fuel compared to shell .but saying that asda and sainsburys ive never felt any problem

Im also finding i cant go by the fuel computer as it changes from time to time , lets say i have 250 miles on the computer and if you drive it considerate the next time you start it up it has changed to 275 or something like that

I can feel a difference with the cars behavior as well and next month it will be having a new oil change so no oil cooler blows etc by leaving it too long (i may of made my mistakes in the past but i have learned from them .

I have also noticed that a few mths after the new clutch was fitted i seem to have some gearbox oil slightly leaking from what looks like the selector pin on top of the gearbox or maybe a seal .But its still running great as always after 3.5 years (robbiev said this was a great car and he wasnt wrong.

well i know when there was the scare at tesco outlets there was a distillery problem with dirty fuel , a few years ago ,like i said i can tell the difference between the shell fuel ive been using for the past year and the tescos i used last mth and the car felt horrible but as i went back to shell the car feels good again .Im only telling you guys how my v6 ran last mth which was just a weird sensation and it was as if the engine was slightly pinking , topped up with shell and brimmed the tank and it feels great again
