Is it possible to tighten the nut without taking the leg off?

yup just leave the car with the weight on the wheels, take the top strut mount off and the nut it there

You might find once it starts to get tight the strut may spin round,try an impact driver

the strut piston will spin, thats why there is usually a method to lock it right at the top of the piston. It can be a fitting for a spanner or allen key or torx

Nuts tightened, eyes watering
, cured most of my knocking now, i can now feel the road as it should be ........... Pot holed
