well removed the clocks, and checked all bulbs, the battery light is a type "501" bulb in a holder and worked fine when tested so its defo not the bulb.
All wiring looks ok, nothing obvious staring back at me.
what should be my next plan?

Is there power getting along the plastic circuit sheet to the bulb?

i removed the bulb and held a torch behind the hole to check it was the battery light and it was.
the bulb was a large push fit 501 in a brown holder.
are we suspecting a break in the wire somewhere?

been a while since I seen the back of a standard dash
where the bulb connects on the dash there is two contacts one will be live the other earth, you will need to check your getting both at the bulb
or check the white connector that go into the dash your getting ignition live on pin 1 (one) its a blue white wire

there isnt a white plug on mine, its got three black plugs.
have tested either side of the bulb, have an earth but no 12v feed.
the black plug going in with the number (1) and a white and blue cable has a 12v feed.

Re: no ignition light on dash??????/
Its the wire you want to measure with the cable disconnected. should be 12v+ with ignition switched on and not with it off.
The circuit is fairly simple, no fueses i dont think.. its just 12v+ from the battery, to the dash through the ignition switch, through the bulb and to the small connector.
So if the wire is connected and not broken, the light bulb is okay, i would say the highest chance is that the bulb didnt blow quick enough and the pcb on the back of the dashboard has been damaged.

then you know its an alternator fault (less likely imo though
)

Re: no ignition light on dash??????/
ok campers we have a lil bit of progress!
had a damn good poke around the electrics with help from a friend the other day and after several test "he's a mechanic" he said "alternator is fooked"!!
but as it was a new one we then spread the search and found the ducting to the heat shield was not connected so the alternator was not being cooled!!!!!
so i'm gonna continue tinkering with the car fixing and tidying other bits until we can afford a new alternator then it will be on with tax and ticket!
