had to call the AA out earlier when i popped to my grans....
had to call the AA out earlier when i popped to my grans....
car has been going fine , no electrical issues etc, anyway after i had been to me nans walked to the car went to drive it and there was no response as if the battery was dead and you could hear a fan noise so called the AA out they put the leads on and away went the v6 ,left it running for full charge and he checked the cooling fan relay (but then realised he didnt have another one so he tried the fuse out and the fan stopped and fuse back in and the fan stayed on so there he said its a problem with the cooling fan staying on (near the battery)and he suggested that as a tempory thing i should leave the fuse in while the car is driving along and take it out while stationary until i get another cooling fan relay.
and while he did this all the volts etc were fine with lights, heaters, etc so there wasnt a problem with the voltage.now my question would be if i did this as he said would it be ok for me to use for the new forest bbq until next week when i can source a relay?

could also be the temp sensor on the cooling bridge...try disconnecting that and see what happens
and you mean the alternator cooling fan??? and its staying on when the ignition is off??

so on the bridge which one do i unplug and plug back in again.
ive taken the car over 2oomiles whilst taking the cooling fan fuse out while its been stationary and the car has been fine so its either a faulty relay, temp sensor on the bridge , or someone said it could be the thermo switch attached to the radiator.

Re: had to call the AA out earlier when i popped to my grans....
ok rang vauxhall and autovaux today to price up how much the cooling fan relays are they took my registration and said its not in our database as its too old (i thought bloody hell hehe any way they came back with 3 varients:
vaux
£19.10 -blue relay (90450169)
£6.80 - green relay (3447012)
£20.05- i think its this one that i need (90060264)
autovaux
they did the last one which came under the same part number but it was £14 not £20.05 but when i looked on the relay box my part number is (90191753) which is a black relay and i also have a white relay (4rb960461-001)
but im also awaiting a phonecall from mark, neil, kieron as there were a few other choices too
so which one is the cooling fan colour the black one or the white one ?

Baz, when the fan is running, stop the engine and start pulling them out one at a time until it stops.
Does the fan run when the car is cold?
When its still spinning/engine stoppd etc, have you tried flicking/tapping the relays? It might just be sticking.
Thing is, pulling the relay out will stop it whether the relay is faulty or not.

no mate but when the car is hot and the fan comes on you take out the green fuse (not any relays well tahts what the aa man said for me to do like i showed you the other day andy
basically if i go home tonight i will stop after driving the car for a while ,take the fuse out and then that cuts the cooling fan out until the next morning i put the fuse back in and the fan doesnt come on which im sure its supposed to do as the engine is cold.

If it wont come on when its cold then the sender switch is ok.
Sounds like the relay is sticking open. give them a whack. usually cures it, or at least proves it is that.
