The overall plan

For all general things Calibra related

small update :)

we started by bleeding the brakes and running the wires for the new mirrors so they are now ready to wire up :)

the fuel pipes are now renewed and not leaking which is the main thing and we changed the aerial base so that there was a nice new seal :)

Image

and now its back down on its wheels :)

So thats how she stands!

Had the engine running again and now it sounds much better! One small problem :)

There is some blue smoke coming out of the back of the exhaust, didn't have time to run it long enough to see whether its just oil burning off after the build or if its the rings (which will make me very annoyed if it is!)

Will have it up and down the road soon to just give it a good clear out :) and will get the dash all back in within the week so hopefully its looking good :)

right had a day off today due to being dianosed with Mortons Neuroma in my foot :/

Managed to get a load of stuff done on the car though!

started off looking like this...
Image

3 hours later and a lot more of the dash in...
Image

Image

Whilst the dash was still out i managed to replace all the faulty bulbs in the dash which was nice :)

then it became time to wire up the oil and voltage guages :) my car doesn't have the loom for this so i butchered up a cdrom audio cable for the single pins as i needed to splice many wires so...
Image

Had to change the mirrors over for the MOT so from this...

to
Image

Image

I know they're still black but they will be sprayed when the full respray is done :)

Oil guages back in and working...
Image

and thats pretty much where im up to... few more bits and bobs done.

The car doesn't seem to want to go into reverse :/ Im thinking the linkage is too loose so will have to adjust that to give me back reverse but apart from that things are looking good :)

right well had a try at sorting some stuff out tonight,

basically the linkage isn't pushing far enough over to get in line with reverse so i tried a bodge of loosening the linkage clamp, moving the gearbox manually into reverse, putting the gearstick into the reverse position and then retightening the clamp.

Starting the car with the clutch in the reverse lights came on and it reversed :D... however! putting it into first and then putting it back into reverse on the stick actually puts it into first on the box!

Theres far too much flex on the linkage so im going to have to replace the bushes and bar etc.

Ill be replacing that at the weekend but the good news is that the box is fine ;)

Whilst i was out there i replaced the bumper, and the door cards...

ill be needing a new bumper and doorcards as they aren't in too good a condition after standing, the front bumper appears to have warped :(

nearly there now though mechanically wise :)

cant really see it from the photo but just below the nearside headlight you can see quite a lot of the polystyrene bumper below the light.

quick update...

got all my linkage parts through last week, when put together it looked a little like so...
Image

Unfortunately it still didn't go back into reverse. It did do once after a little rage was unleached upon the gearstick which leads me to suggest the bush on the stick itself was worn...

After looking at the bush it was definitely worn on the reverse side. I dont think the bush is pushing the turret far enough over so its not going into gear.

Lets hope anyway, new bush at 3 quid will arrive on Thursday ;)

well what can i say... one step forwards two steps back :(

started off by fitting my new bush to my gearstick and low and behold i can now find reverse :)

So i think why not give it a little run.

Running fine until the coolant light comes on so i quickly park it up.

It seemed to have lost quite a lot so i refil her up and give it a while. I thought it may have been a big airlock so i tried the normal bleeding process for these engines (run up to temp with expansion tank cap off) and did that fine. The guage went up to normal temp so i turn it off and try again with a little run.

This time the water temp guage is going up and down like a woman of the nights knickers so i park it up again. After 10 seconds of the car being parked up theres a large pop and a woosh of water :(

the lower pipe of the rad water pump had blown off.

Image

Now theres one of four causes.

1) Blocked Radiator
2) Big Airlock
3) Dodgy rad water pump
4) Blown headgasket

The first two i will test tomorrow by sticking a hose into the rad and making sure water is flowing freely.

the 3rd i doubt very much as there was warm water going to the rad.

The 4th would be a massive blow and i would literally go ape sh** at anybody who is in the near vicinity as it was supposedly working fine when bought.

So tonight she's looking sad again and I await the tests tomorrow.

Wish me luck!
