Car keeps cutting out! Would appreciate some input
hi, i got a 1993 cally redtop. Last year around April the car, after being left stationary for any random period of time, would randomly not start. Then the problem suddenly dissapeared. Until last week.
The car keeps cutting out intermitently, when I start it when it's stationary, it runs absolutely fine, no problems. As soon as I move the car, after a random period of time, could be 10 seconds, could be 10 minutes, the engine suddenly dies. When I try and start it again, and switch the ignition on, I hear a wierd clicking noise coming from behind the glovebox, and the revmeter starts flicking up and down randomly. I have to leave the car stationary again for a random amount of time, and then the car starts again! It's a terrible problem to have, because when it's running its difficult to know what it could be.
What on earth could be causing it. Lose connection? Any Ideas?
As I say the problem appeared last April, then the car seemed to fix itself. And now its back and not going away. IF someone could tell me what are the cables to check for in terms of a car starting up that'd really help. Could it be a spark lead or distributor lead issue? What's with the clicking noise behind the glovebox. and would a dodgy spark lead cause the revmeter to flick up and down when the ignition is switched on.

it cuts out at any revs.
its got an aftermarket immobiliser yeah, but this seems to be functioning fine, the immob doesn't even let the car turn over if its not disabled, so im pretty sure its not that. The EML does come on but does not flicker.
Could it be like a fuel pump relay or something? Can that cause intermittent random starting and cutting out?
Since last year April, when I filled it with oil, the oil light remained on permanently, regardless of what levels of oil is in the car. Could this be related? Aren't oil pressure and fuel relays linked or something?

well.
you'll never guess what it was.
i did what you said, fiddled about with it, and the car started. So I thought 'sweet problem fixed'. Went to do some shopping at morrisons before the grand prix, came back to the car, and it didn't start. Fiddling with the wiring and that metal box and stuff, made no difference, and the relay kept clicking (the relay that was clicking was a GM part by the way, I don't think it was the immobiliser relay). And the reason it was clicking?
I called the AA. The guy saw what was happening. Opened my bonnet. Tightened the leads on the battery terminal. And it worked. lol!
So. Evidently it was simply an issue of the battery not hooked in properly (this makes sense because I had to remove the battery recently to get to a bulb very recently so the car could pass its MOT).

LOL, doh!!!
Atleast you've got it sorted though. I've got an annoying problem with my V6 cutting out but have tried lists of things with no joy including coil pack, ignition amp, fuel relay etc. Next thing is a bit extreme but I'm changing the engine wiring loom and if I can find one, I'm gonna try another ECU.
