v6 alternator fan

Any electrical issues

v6 alternator fan

by simon07v6 » Wed Feb 13, 2008 8:41 pm

Alright people. My cally won't start, it keeps going flat. I've tested it to see if it's charging, only 13v. I checked my alternator fan- not working. I've checked for a feed at the plug connection, but no feed. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome. Where's the relay? Any common prblems? Thanks Simon

Cant find a fuse or a relay for the alternator fan !

Without the fan working alternator will just overheat and die.

The alternator fan is triggered by the coolant tempreture sensor on the coolant bridge and this inturn is controlled by relay K26 which can be found in the engine relay frame. This relay is also for the main fan.

Probaly same thing happened as to me - brushes that rotor of alternator fan electric motor sit in plastic housing and that has melted - there is no spare brushes or those plastic bits to buy only whole fan motor part ant that costs around 150 pounds here... I am currently driving without fan and other bits coneccted to it so more air can come to the back of the engine.

Im trying to find some solution for this and one idea I had is to find some 12v electric motor (electronics shop) that can fit into casing and make some mounts to make it stand in same position as original one - will make a how to if I decide to go with this.

In meantime it would be good if other v6 owners would check does their alternator fan actualy works - maybe we could come to some life expectancy for fan motors to see is it worth it to buy original one?

And i think they work all the time or they are connected with main coolant fan - cant check as my doesent work :D

They are controlled by the coolant temperature sensor.
