Shaking - doing my head in!

by MadOnVaux! » Tue Oct 03, 2006 3:56 pm

My Calibra shakes through the steering upto 60mph, after that its fine...

Now before you all start shouting balancing at me, its been done twice, at seperate places and its 100% bang on.

It's always had a slight shake ever since i bought it, but since fitting the new front tyres its got a whole lot worse.

Not standard though, im on 17" Kahn RS-R wheels with 215/40-17 tyres...the wheels are ET45 but they dont fit Vauxhalls like other wheels do due to their design, so i had to fit 5mm spacers...was on universal spacers but have just invested in proper exact hub-bore drilled item's and extended wheel bolts...i have the proper Kahn spiggot rings too, and the car is not lowered.

First thought was it was due to the spacers, but upon speaking to someone who works in motorsport, he said that balance is only affected by incorrect weighting on the outside of the wheel, nothing near the hub would throw balance out, so it can't be them.

I also get shaking when braking, but the disks and pads are not that old, so warping cant really be a problem.

My garage has checked everything such as wishbones, track-rod ends, drive shafts, bushes, top mounts and all sorts and say's everything is rock solid...

I love the car to bits, but im getting kind-of fed up with this shaking situation now, it seems like nothing will sort it...has anyone any further idea's on here please?

Thanks

has it ever been in a crash that you know of, could be somethings been bent and not put right properly, could be an option

Im pretty much 100% sure its never been in a crash, all the paintwork around the front end (bumper, wings, bonnet & slam panel etc) is all in a condition commensurate with being on the car since new and befitting the mileage.

Severely 'out' tracking wont cause this will it?

I just think its wierd that its fealt from like 40-60mph, wiyth it being its worst at 60mph, then fine upwards of that...surely if it was component error it would be fealt though all speeds?...when i had a miss-shaped tyre on when i bought it, you could feel it all the time.

yeah mine was doing the same the other week pulling like fook to the left, but that was due to the passenger tyre having a huge bulge on the inside wall of it, twas rather scary driving it with that on

for a start i would take both front wheels off and check the tyres as a starting point, just so you can cancel them off the list, have you had a slow puncture recently or anything as this is what caused the bulge in mine i think

funny this as i seem to be having some problems and i have 17" kahns on mine, look the same as yours do but mine are a few years old now as the previous owner had them put on, just wondering if my problem where a metallic noise could be from spacers or something, how do you check what ET they are as i may have to look down that route too, do all kahns need spacers etc or is it just certain styles or is it cause of the ET45 on them

also when wheels are off just check the tyre wear too, see if it is taking more tread off the inside or outside of the tyres, not sure if tracking would help, i know they balance the wheels when they put new tyres on but do they do the tracking too, i'd say take it to a tracking place and explain to them the symptons you are getting and see what they say

I had to fit spacers as the inside of the spokes caught on the front calipers, rears are fine as the brakes are set-back...i phoned Kahn about it and they said due to the design of the wheel they reccomended ET35 for the Calibra to fit straight on!

The ET is stamped inside of one of the spokes.

does the wheel sit nicely over the hub?

what i mean is....when you take all the bolts out does the wheel just sit there by itself?, there is a "round bit" in the centre of the alloy, it sits over the "sticky-out" bit on the hub (you with me?)

if this does not meet up then you will get horrific shake and thats what yours sounds like!

itsd not just the bolts that have to fit, the centre has to be the same size and if not you must buy spacers to take this slack up

BTW your motorsport guy should know this!

also another guy on here found his car to be 10mm shorter on one side than the other, the result of a previous incident. VIC check it to make sure it hasnt had an accident before and if it has that the car was pulled correctly and fixed properly.

just a thought.

what about the hubs. are they ok. and i fixed my wobble by putting spigot rings on coz they were missing. Also is your wheel on tight enough. mine wasn't so no when doing them up for that last bit i actual use my foot and press down realy hard. that helped

if its had warped discs for a while previously it could be that the calipers have warped

another highly likely situation is the disks are mounted poorly, onto rust, or onto the retaining screw or soemthing daft.. so remove them and check its all mounted properly.. its the way its vibrates when braking that makes me ponder that.

you prob think its daft but on my last one i hit a pot hole and buckled my right front wheel. this caused my wheel to judder between between 40 and 65.
i took it for tracking and it was only noticeable when it was spinning around on the balancing machine.
swap your front wheels to the back and see if the problem persists?

Thanks for the replies guys...

TFS - The wheel sits snugly and flat to the hub, 'round bit' do you mean spiggot ring?

sev - would appear nothing has been replaced on the car, everything seems aged with the car, if you get me?

robs-se - i think the hubs will be the next port of call, have correct Kahn spiggots on, and the wheels are on tight.

KA25 - do calipers warp?

Stupink - Had new disks and pads not too long back, fittd by my garage, and they wouldnt mount them onto heavy rusty hubs.

andy708 - pretty sute the wheel isnt buckled...peopletell me that it would show up on balancer if it was.
