Wheel Bearing
My off side wheel bearing has shot to pieces (I think)! I think this because there is a massive rumble whilst driving, it gets even worse when you steer left. I have jacked it up, and there is no play in the wheel, but it must be pretty far gone because of the noise, its unbearable and makes all the dash rattle and shake. I will be travelling a fair few miles at the weekend, so i really need to sort it by then. Anyone know anywhere that could do it at such short notice and roughly how much it will cost? I assume it is the wheel bearing, but confused me a bit as there is no play in the wheel, the noise its making i thought the whell would be nearly falling off! Im in Fleet in Hampshire. Thanks!

only out of the hub not the gearbox.
basicly jack up the car and put it on stands.
remove wheel
remove brakes but no need to remove hose. support the caliper so not to strain teh hose
undo 2 lower arm bolts and lower shock bolt
undo track rod end and split from hub
remove hub.
its easy to rmove th old bearing but you will need a prees of some kind to fit the new bearing.
its fairly simple.
someone please add on anything i have missed
for a novice about 2-3 hours. garage bout an hour ish

Have you checked the other side...? The weight transference when turning left would in theory put the bearing of the right wheel under more stress. As the Calibra bearings aren't taper bearing it's not as easy to tell for sure when turning. Also, the acoustics in the cabin can throw you way off the scent. I'd changed both my front bearings before I discovered is was one of the rear bearings. Everyone who rode in the car said it definately sounded like one of the fronts..

Was just going to say the same thing myself.
Think it cost me £40 to have a rear one changed on my Turbo.

well, i have checked each wheel, but there is no play in any of them,but other than this, i dont know any other way of telling if its gone. spoke to the garage today, he said it sounds more like the cv joint, especially as it got advisory for it on the mot. its going in thursday to be checked/fixed if he got time. thanks!

I've got to do this job on my SE7 so I can sell it. So far I've changed the rear offside hub and the front offside bearing and CV and I still have the same noise!! I've now got a replacement leg with a new bearing and ditto drive shaft with new CV ready to go on the nearside. I'm just waiting for the time and the motivation! The noise has been bugging me for months and clearly its very difficult to identify where a bearing noise is coming from. Replacing the bearing at the front is not that easy as its an interfearance fit in the leg and on the hub. Replacing a rear bearing is practically impossible! I opted to change the whole swinging arm with a known good bearing in it. Much easier! I do hope you've identified the correct wheel mate and do let us know if the garage cured the problem and how much it cost.

well it was the bearing, off side. it was nackered, they gave me the old one. they stitched me right up tho i think, was £131 altogether parts labour and vat, but im not that bothered coz i needed it done by the weekend, & it drives like a dream now! The garage pointed out to me that both the wishbones are bent, he asked me when it was mot'd (feburary) he said it should've been a straight fail.how do they get bent? he said somebody has probably purposly bent them to make it lower?
