No power steering when turning left

by Toddy » Tue Aug 16, 2005 10:25 am

Right, just got back from my stag do so haven't had the chance to look into this yet but while I was away Lisa borrowed my car to go on her hen night. Whilst she was turning left she said there was a clunk and the power steering went but only when turning left (turning right is as normal). Anybody got any ideas on this? What should I look at first apart from a big garage bill:roll:

There is no noise coming from it and everything else seems normal. Gonna go do the first couple of checks but still feeling very hungover:(

new rack needed im afraid..
very very very slim chance of a blockage in the pipework to the lhs of the rack, but erm.. no not really.. sorry.. the clonk gives it away.. suspect you have an old ZF rack, they do stupid things like that, been there dun that.. not too expensive for a recon rack, but not really a DIY swap over job unless youre feeling brave.

The reconditioners I got mine from (i cannot recall im afraid) do prices on exchange.. they did mine the same price but told me to throw my ZF in the skip as they didn't want it cluttering up their workshop lol. I'm quite supprised to see them listed on that site, i got the impression they wernt economic and/or worth bothering to repair.

Thanks you two;)

I guess I need to buy the Saginaw square one, is this just a straight swap even though I probably have the ZF one?

Just been on the phone and they don't do the ZF one anymore even though it's stil listed (as it's crap;) ). Got a price for the Saginaw one, £158.00 delivered. Not as bad as I thought.

Thanks again,
Toddy

hehehe... that's a little more reassuring then
I think I paid 80quid for mine.. but i can't be certain. try ringing around a couple of local reconditioners.. should be in the yellow pages.. not sure what under. might be easier to use yell.com might be able to pick one up locally cheaper

Toddy

Did you try westernpowersteering mate? The one Steve suggested?
I got mine from there too. By the looks of it most turbos are ZF type. Its to do with having a ally tube and it wears out!!!!

Its not an easy job as you have lots and lots of things in the way!!! i did mine when gearbox and engine where out! much easier then

I suspect best and easiets way is to take the inlet manifold off and then swap it. Stil its gonna a biatch of a job.

Good luck

Cheers

Nariman, yea I phoned westernpowersteering who were very helpful. It's going into a garage to be changed as I haven't the tools, space or skill to do it;)

It's not too bad to drive at the moment which is good as I need it for work tomorrow.

Cheers,

Still haven't got round to getting it sorted as I've been way to busy at work. It's now started to make a noise, "phisssst" (same noise as if it's leaking air;) ) when I turn the wheel!!!!!!

Any ideas, apart from a new rack:D
