Misfiring badly

by buzzaldrin » Mon Apr 28, 2008 10:16 am

Back again!!

Had my car tested after a year on SORN. Failed on emissions, mainly, but came away from the garage misfiring badly, with crap power.

Another garage diagnosed a faulty coil pack, so I bought a new one. Unfortunately this didn't sort the problem.

Had the ECU tested and this is fine. I remember the MOT tester saying that the lambda sensor was fine and he thought the CAT might need replacing as the emissions were so high.

I now need some help on what to do next as this is beginning to cost serious moola with no solution.

All help greatly appreciated, as per usual.

Cheers, Neil.

Okay, checked the plugs, and my latest guy checked the spark at the coil, not at the plugs, hence his diagnosis of the coil pack. Oh, and changed the fuel before test (well, filled up the nearly empty tank anyhoo).

Engine is 97 2.5V6, Ecotec.

Now thinking it may be a loom problem!?

it may be worth doing the old paper clip test to see if there are any fault codes stored as it could easily be a sensor, however it is not unheard of for cats to collapse, I'd still suspect the lambda too

If you can find someone nearby with another v6 one of the comon problems is the ignition amplifier. Before purchasing a new one swap one off another car that is running right .

I read a thread this morning that mentioned the ignition amplifier, and will relay that info to my mechanic, so thanks for that.

Does anyone know why the coil pack would show faulty if any of the problems mentioned were correct? Cos the mechanic was quick to diagnose the problem at the coil and not at the end of the leads.

The ignition amplifier will sow a fault on the coil pack as 2 of the leads wont be sparking iirc the amp sends signals in pairs to 2 coil nodes when damaged 2 of these signals dont get through allowing the car to run but drive like a bag of s***e.

had the same problem replaced the coil only to find no difference. Vauxhall will probably tell your mechanic there is no amplifier on the coil pack cause they are retards.

Nice one. So I think I read that the amplifier is on the passenger side behind the battery, is that right?

:D

Nice one boys!! Got an amplifier from a scrapper - £10. Whipped it on, started it up, everything sweet!!

Now for the MOT.

Oh, anyone interested in a brand new coil pack??!!

Cheers lads. Great help again.

Neil.

TBF andy almost no garage will diagnose the amp. Vauxhall dont acknowledge it exists half the time. I know cause it happened to me and someone else (fraz) told me what to look for after we had gone down the same route of sourcing another coil pack.
