Missfiring!!?? randomly

by swiftcarl » Fri Jul 21, 2006 4:00 pm

Hi all

I've just purchased a 94 'M' Ecotec 16v. the starter motors a bit lazy so the ECU keeps forcing the engine into safe mode (limiting it to 4000 revs), i've bought a new starter motor but am told i'll need to reset the ECU. is this right?

Also every now and again it will start missfiring then the engine cuts out. 10 mins later its fine again. does anybody know what this could be?!!!

yes correct, just disconnect the battery for an hour or so and that should clear the code, as long as it's not still faulty

no probs, misfiring could be numerous things, see what happens when you d/c the battery and see if the engine management light is coming on after that, if it is, it logs the codes on the ecu and you can read them using a paper clip and this guide

<a href="http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm" target="_blank">http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm</a>

dead easy to do and saves you £50 rather than going to vauxhall and plugging it into a machine

oh and welcome to the site,
Cozy
