Weird Rear Tail lights problem

by WillsToy » Tue Mar 21, 2006 12:17 am

Kinda hoping someone may be able to confirm a strange fault of my calibra.
Basically notied that my right hand tail light was out, checked the bulb wasnt that as i swapped with LH side and it lit up.
Checked the fuse, it's ok
RH brake, reverse, fog light and indicators all ok.
Now the funny bit came when i left the indicators on the tail lamp lit (parking lamp)
As soon as i switch it off, lights when out.
Now at a guess it's my headlamp switch thats faulty.
Has anyone esle had this problem??? or does anyone esle have any ideas?

Hope it make some sense
Cheers in advance

Looking at the haynes wiring daigrams in the daylight.
I still think it may be my switch or relay.
Still puzzled a little but defo no 12v when side lightas switch on only if i leave the parking lights on will the Rh tail light up.

is it the tail light that doesn't work or is it the brake/tail light that isn't working and do you get any bulb error lights on the dash

No bulb error on dash, bulb is duff as never comes on with ignition.
Its the tail light not the brake thats ok, bulbs are ok as switch with other side and all work.
Park light will come on. just no tail or side lights as some say.

if it is then i'm not sure mate, i have just solved all my bulb problems recently as i kept having probs on the right hand stop/tail light but thats all sorted, maybe a bad connection to that side light, have you checked to make sure the wires are connected to it and none have worked their way loose or snapped off

Yep number 4,its really odd as will light up when park lights on.
Will give the wiring a good check over, like you say might be something loose.
Cheers for helping reps added

hmmm that is a weird one, it comes on with the parking lamps on but doesn't when headlights are on, that is very weird

like i said check the wiring is connected, think there are two connected to it one top one bottom, that may be the problem, it could only have one connected to it and that one is probably connected to the indicators when parking light is applied and if the other one is disconnected then that could be something that links it to the headlights, check the one on the left first and see if anything is different on the right hand one

i'm only guessing or it could be a bad earth to that unit not sure though

and maybe check the headlight switch but i doubt it will be anything in there as the left light works with the headlights on,

could be moisture getting into that one somewhere, give the contacts on the bulb holder a clean too, could just be crap on the connector

Well cracked it , i pull my switych out gave it a clean and a check over placed it back in and bingo all lights worked.

I reckon I may of upset it a while back when i fitted LEDS, just took it's time before it decided to fail. If you tested it on the rear of the switch between pin 30 and 38R it was O/C when in the side light position. Between 30 and 38L was S/C so ok.
Looking at the switch internals I think one of those metal siders must of moved or been covered in grease/dirt.
