Removing ABS?

by ValverRob » Sun Apr 08, 2007 10:27 pm

Will it be ok to remove the ABS from the car? do I have to take it all out or can I just remove the sensors and ecu or will it fail the M.O.T. because the ABS unit is still there?

I've never liked the idea of ABS, always thought what of something goes dicky and you have no brakes, then it happened today! It seemed to think the wheels were locking up as soon as I touched the brakes so kicked the pedal back up, was very hard to stop even at low speed (5-10 mph) let alone 30 or 60, so I pulled over, unplugged one of the sensors to stop it working and go back to regular brakes and I'd like to keep it like that!

I know if the ABS light stays on its an M.O.T. fail, and if the car has ABS but the light doesnt come on its a fail, but if I remove the ABS unit I'd need to change the master cylinder wouldn't I? ABS ones have 2 outputs and non-ABS has 4 (or is that just peugeot?)

It's also a fair bit of work to remove the unit and re-route all the pipes!

Any M.O.T. testers to help out?

Thanks,
Rob

well if you REALLY want to..and TBH I cant see why you would ...why not just disconect the ABS pump..and then link the ABS light to another dash bulb that goes out with the check control ..washer level springs to mind

Well I REALLY want to because something that people always said would never happen did happen and it could have been a lot worse than it was had I have been going fast, thanks for your suggestion, I'll look into it

Thanks,

well if there is a fault would it not be better to fix the fault than disconnect it???

you would also have to inform your insurance company ..as you are altering the car from the standard

Thing is, I don't know where the fault is, the light didn't come on or anything, just no brakes, then I unplugged a sensor, putting the abs light on and making my brakes work, and if I do find and fix the problem whats to stop it happening again and killing me?

sounds more like you lost servo assistance than the ABS failing

Check your sensor rings are nice and clean, not broken, and not loose on the shafts. That can lead to dangerous happenings as it thinks the wheels are locked when they are not so backs off the pressure. Other than that i'ts fairly reliable from my experience and worth having overall.

That happend to my first Calibra and I ended up rear ending a rover. Not much came of it though. Very scary when car wont stop!

Turned out that when I jet washed the engine the ABS controller got a little wet.

i have noticed my ABS light comes on alot aswell. not all the tme but most of the time and when im driving at low speed sometimes i brake and i feel a slite grind on the brake pedal and the brakes dont work. as soon as it hapens i take my foot off and put it back on and they work. but it only hapens when i brake lightely.
is that the same with your car?
