16v Brakes 1994

Hi all,

Just asking for opinions really. My 1994 16v model's brakes are a bit poo. I never really noticed before until I got in my dads new vectra & then more recently a brand new VW touran.

I mean they make the car stop, but you have to use a bit more leg muscle and think about it a bit sooner than you would in a new car.

Have 16v (X20XEV) calibra brakes always been poo or is this old car syndrome?

I was looking at the LMF 288mm disc & V6 caliper upgrade for £215 & a set of braided hoses. Will these make a noticable improvement at all?

I've already cleaned the breaks up is there anything else I should look at like replacing the fluid or something?

a fluid change wont hurt plus you'll be bleeding any air out so it may improve them quite a bit, but it all depends on how much of a heavy braker you are, I fitted the 288mm upgrade but still suffered with brake fade so ended up with the 308mm setup

I agree with Phantom, but you can do the V6 upgrade cheaper than that, if you get a set of pads+discs from vauxhall and a pair of calipers and carriers from a scrapyard you're set.

All you have to do is get the discs redrilled to four stud.

Pads for 288mm are cheaper than pads for 308mm iirc? Could be wrong though.

Do the calipers and carriers go straight on the 16v then (straight swap)?

Also can you confirm, when people talk of upgrades and big brake kits, they are only referring to the front pair are they not?

Yes, carriers and calipers go straight on, and yes, they are only talking about fronts.

just order 4 stud discs from courtney, fit turbo/V6 calipers and "all done mate"
