ID the brake disc!

by Leigh » Wed Apr 02, 2008 12:14 pm

Simple question probably, but I want to avoid getting the wrong part,
many years ago when I last had the rear discs changed my mechanic said at the time that they had to take the original ones they ordered back as they were wrong fit, and that mine (8V) had turbo hubs on it.

Now I'm going to do the rear discs and pads soon myself, wanted to make sure I get the right discs..
I've measured them as best I can and they're 270mm,
here's a pic... can someone id it from this info?
thanks,
Leigh

all the rear hubs on the 4 stud models are the same size as far as I'm aware

I wondered why he said it had turbo hubs on it back then, even I know the turbo's are 5 stuf (and mines 4 - taken the wheels off enough times to know that! LOL).

So does anyone have access to EPC handy (haven't got it installed at home yet after rebuilding PC), maybe someone can check a part number for me, does 270mm sounds right even for 4 stud?
There's just so many blooming choices when you look online (szes, studs, with/without hub etc..)
cheers for the replies so far tho guys

Leigh,
It's a horrible, horrible job - or was on my V6 Calibra and took virtually all of one weekend to do. I also replaced the handbrake cable at the same time which was just as well as it was corroded to f$%£. You can also buy the spring kits - they're bu66ers to fit though new or old. I should have sprayed my calipers at the same time but didn't get round to it.
Good luck Vanguard

I had my handbrake cable done about 2 years ago as one of the underbody mounting points had pulled away, new cable fitted and mounting welded etc, but I need to adjust it again as it's only just holding on the very last click (hate adjusting the handbrake , that damn little click wheel through the hole in the disc is a nightmare!).
I took my rear discs off about a 1.5 years ago to replace the handbrake shoes and was very suprised how easily they came off, slight tap with a hammer around the edges and it was free.
I bought 2 replacement springs a few weeks ago from ebay, tho that's one bit I'm definately NOT looking forward too, I remember when I was trying to refit the old ones after changing the handbrake shoes, and they were old and feeble, the new ones will be fun...

Just a quick thanks for checking those part numbers last month, finally got them fitted this w/end (and had the usual fun adjusting the handbrake as well, I HATE that job!). Back plates were in quite good condition, so I've given them a quick coat with some cylinder black paint I had lying around to try and keep them tidy, and did the calipers in red (used to have them silver)

Replaced the 2 handbrake return springs as well, one was snapped, one was rusty and twisted to hell.

**TIP** : After many attempts and lots of swearing, a lightbulb moment :-
Hook the spring into the hole in the lever in the backplate, push some string (I doubled it up) through the hole in the backplate, hook that over the free end of the spring and use it to pull it through the backplate hole, made it much easier than trying to poke it through with a screwdriver etc.
