Intermitent Knocking?

by Fostersice17 » Sat Jan 13, 2007 10:38 am

Coming home from work the other night and i hit a huge pot hole in the road,i thought i had definatly kerbed my wheel as this hole was huge and it threw the car almost in the air, stopped the car and had a look and the wheel was fine, but now im getting this intermitent knocking coming from the front of the car,it can happen at any speed over 50,i drove to work today and it was fine,so its not happening all the time just every now and then? Any ideas what it could be?

As said above, I had this exact thing happen 1 week before the MOT. Had to have both front lower arms replaced as one was worn and the other was distroyed by the pot hole.

any bit on the suspension or steering that is worn enough to knock ..is dangerous to a degree. depends how worn its is..and don't forget any suspension or braking parts should be changed as a pair ..If it was me I would get two arms and replace them. If the pothole was that big its also more likely to have knocked your tracking out I would also expect the wheel bearing to go soon as well..but its all down to how thick your wallet is ..me I would just change the lot at same time, work out cheaper in the end

you will have popped out the bottom arm bush out
it will knock but cant really come off due to the bolt thru it
I destroyed a pair hitting a newly made speedhump before it had any paint on it etc!

I would also take your wheel off and check the inside rim just in case

Mine has been knocking for a while. I changed the topmount that was guilty for some of it. But there are still knocks, next I will change the roll bar bushes, then wishbones (fitting poly bushes) Have new shocks to go in too...that should do the trick. Lower arms knock when braking and accelerating - that i know for certain.
