Hand Brake Lever

How much side to side play is normal for the hand brake lever in the up position. Mine moves about half inch when waggled side to side and every so often when released it feels like it catches on something.
Is this normal?

if it catches it sounds like the racthet mech is worn out as this is the same with mine
new ones from vx are around £80 +VAT
i'm still trying to find a second hand one but not had much luck so far
