Scraping sound & Stiff Handbrake....?

by craigmcd82 » Thu Feb 23, 2006 8:19 pm

I got home today and the handbrake seems a lot tighter than usual... doesnt travel as far as usualy, and it feels like there is something stopping it...

Just went out again, and I can hear a metallic scraping sound from the rear left in time with the wheel goin round...

The handbrake is still holding the car, but definitely feels a lot different, and isnt moving as far...

Anyone any idea whats going on there???

Had some pipes changed for the MOT, but that was about a month ago. It suddenly seems to be operating differently today, and theres an odd scraping sound suddenly appeared.... :-S

Check the brake shield at the back of the brake is not rubbing against the inside of the wheel.

That could be what it is.... Ive just been out (again), and the noise seems to have gone down a bit... but i think its still there slightly.

Would this affect the handbrake travel though? Seems to stop much shorter and suddenly than before...

sounds like one of your shoes has come detached, check it before it does any damage, quite probably the pin and spring have come loose and the shoes moved, happened on mine as the backplate had rusted and the pin had nothing to attach to.

Sounds like you're right. The garage have said they can spend hours cleaning up each side, and putting them back together, but I figured it might be a better idea (and possibly cheaper) to just replace the discs...

Can anyone tell me what diameter the rear discs are for an 8valve (95)? Front would be good as well, - il do them myself... Part numbers would be even more useful! :-)

Cheers Fraz.... However, I've just found out that this wont solve my problem as the shoes dont come with the discs... Good info though.

Im having trouble explaining to garages whats wrong with it...dont quite know myself! Apart from new brake shoes, am I likely to need anything else to get this sorted?

Take the hub off and have a look at where the pin and spring should be. mine did this and the scrapping sound was the pin stuck under the shoe and rubbing on the inside of the hub.

Re attach the pin and spring (may be tricky if the hole has rusted) and all should be ok
