Car shudders on braking?

by debowen » Wed Jul 20, 2005 1:46 am

When I brake reasonably hard the car shudders a bit, nothing exiting, but a solid 'wobble" that seems to be more in the rear.
The pads are only 25% worn, the ABS is fine and tyres have done 15,000km.
what's up Doc?

I'd say it's the disks being warped as well.. but as above, do you get any vibration while driving or only when braking?

(quick lesson on the disks warping: Do NOT leave your foot on the brake when you've come to a stop as the heat from the disks / pads transfers to the fluid AND also creates a hot spot on the disk which leads to warping)

hi guys i got the same problem here , brakes judder , and steering wheel wobbles braking from 60 to 50 mph out side this range they are normal , only get the judder /wobble on braking in the range stated..feels real bad, feels like whole car is shaking, say im travelling at 70/80 i put brakes on and as it passes 60 to 50 it wobbles like hell, then goes once past 50 . thats about as much info i can give

warped discs for me too? i only put new discs on front 2 years ago

comments welcome....

Yeah my v6 did exactly the same. Juddered between 50 and 60 only. I changed the discs and pads and it went away.

All sounds like warped disks, if it only shakes during braking it can only be warped disks.

Thanks Guys,
The rear rotors were warped, fortunately they could be skimmed. The shop that did the skimming said he thought the tyre fitters might have been the problems. They have their rattle guns at full torque and slam on the nuts (time is money! No care) distorting the rotor. Thanks for the tip about resting on the brake pedal at the lights, causing a hotspot, seems logical.
Is there anything that can be done to maintain the ABS system?

Maintain it? Not really - the sensors etc rarely fail.
