Cheap upgrade for crappy headlamps needed

by richardworrall » Sun Dec 09, 2007 11:57 pm

OK guys, just realised tonight how crap my standard headlamps are.

Dont want any expensive ideas from you all, just want your advise on my cheap idea of getting new bulbs(how legal are the uprated wattage ones??) and setting them up on independant relays with uprated wiring.

Anybody done this and is it worth it?

Anything above 55w is illegal and go to high with the wattage and you in danger of melting the headlights.

Uprated wiring and relays is another option, Just use a thick wire with an in-line fuse from the battery to the relay, another thick wire from relay to headlight bulb, then use the original headlight wire as a trigger wire to the relay, and remember to up rate the earths as well.

HID's and yes i know you didn't want expensive idea's but the price of these kits are coming down and are the best modification for the headlight.
sometimes being cheap doesn't always mean best :)

You can pick up HIDs for £90-100 these days. Well worth it IMO. I tried better bulbs and uprated wiring, but it was never good enough to drive safely at night on unlit roads. HIDs are a whole new world of bright.

On the same subject, where is the best place to get hold of a kit? Also maybe a stupid question but what advantage if any, apart from looking better, do angel eyes have?

Cheers. One more question though. I see there are different versions of the HID kit. What would be the most appropriate kit for me and does the HID kit increase the light output on both high and low beam? The migweb deal looks good?

The Calibra headlight has seperate bulbs for the full and dipped beam. The HID kit replaces the dipped beam bulb, which is an H1 type.

The colour of the light is down to personal preference, i personally have the 6000k as it's the brightest and least chav.

Cheers for the advice EY. I see the 6000k is the most common. Thought about going for the 5000k, would that be a little over the top?

Nah, they're fine. It's just the blue ones that look s**t IMO.

HID lights

I know this might sound a bit silly, but how about a set of HIDs for the dipped, and another set for the full beams? Wouldn't the full beam be much better too? And no, my name isn't Rosthchild.

Never really thought about it TBH. I'd be interested to know though as you can get HIDs for £50 these days.
