double check the connector to the door isnt corroded. but yest the window motor circuit boards are prone to fail. disconnect the connector from the board (inside the door) and you can test with a multimeter, but its most likely duff assuming the main connector is ok, they are prone to waterlog.

update
well to update this thread, had the car stashed away on my bro's drive since saturday with his golf in front at night. today phoned vx to see if they knew how to get up the window manually, they didnt!; but recommended i give the aa a call since i am a member. did that and the guy came out tonight, he scratched his head for a bit but eventually managed to get it up(weyhey!!), to do this he had to remove the back of the motor and twist the shaft as i pulled up the window, unfortunatly this left the motor in bits so the window drops back down, i've propped it up and its secure enough for now at least i can lock up and activate the alarm.
as he was checking every thing he put a multi metre across the wires, one red one black and two signal wires from the switch, he could not understand why he was gettig a positive reading from the red and both signal wires. is this normal?, could it be linked to the problem??
cheers (sorry for the long post)

well just picked up a s/h motor. autovaux dont stock them and to get one in from vx was gonna cost £160. phaned a local vaux spares and he said he had a few in all with different plugs depending on what year they were. went down and he found the right one plugged it in and it all works fine. the cost for the complete set up including the scissor thingy, 20 quid RESULT
