Alternator Not Charging Underload
howdy all
av been having some probs with my alternator it charges fine with the lights and stereo (amp and sub included) but when i switch on the heated seats and heated windows etc..... underload it drops between 12.5 - 13.0 volts
alternators not that old and still got a warrenty so can just take it back and get a replacement.
any ideas?
the only thing i can think of is just after the alternator was fitted my battery negitive cable snaped ,my mistake and i didn't buy another 1 just extended it with a 30amp wire which is alot smaller than the negitive cable , but worked for a good 4months could that effect it over time??

hmmm
i have a 120amp alternator on my car. fan is always on, and when i switch on heated seats or defogger, voltometer shows even 10volts and a very dim battery light appears on the dash. i think it has something to do with the loom in the car and to the dash.
because you should measure the battery output with a multimeter straight from the battery as i am pretty sure it will show around 13v which is not bad at all.
i think the voltometer has to be connected somewhere else than the loom. maybe a battery feed with relay or something in order to avoid melting the wire? dunno not sure about this....
maybe someone can help?

i took it to a garage for a check up he asked me to turn everythink on , he says straight away the alternators nacked, i asked him what volts it was putting out 12.5 13.0 i would of thought that if everythink was switch on the volts should drop anyway but not sure. i should off gave the car a rev coz idle runs up and down a little, think i will be ok
just wanting to know if any 1 has had the same prob

at the moment no, been out a few times for about 20mins with lights, spot lights and stereo on (not loud tho) and start fine the next morning.
a couple of weeks ago , i took the car for its MOT and it failed on the headlights been to high up (lucky eh!! nah its my tender loving care
so when i got back home i turned the lights and the spot lights on but the engine was off i had been playing around for about 15mins when i came to turn the engine over it tryed to start but didn't have enough power in the battery i thought that it was abit weird the battery going dead so quick, but after thinking it happened a while back but this time ad had the stereo on, break down service jumped it off just after a few sec's off charge
and now the garage is saying i need a new alternator , maybe am just been paronoid or maybe try turning the engine on before assing around with lights and stereos

to tell u the truth, it dont sound like u have an alternator prob
it could just be a battery on its way out
