Ignition amplifier - possible prob?
Drew a blank at the scrappie. Someone had already been at the vectra and tore it to pieces. Hopefully got one on its way for testing. Have now noticed something strange, the ecu light doesn't come on when initially starting the car? I could have swore that it came on before and went out with all the rest of the lights. I hope it's not the ecu that is trout? What symptoms would I get? Would the car actually start? I'm puzzled

Ok, managed to track down a guy with another diagnostic meter. He connected it up this morning and it came up with the codes -
16 knock sensor no.1 - no change in voltage
31 Eng Rpm signal (crankshaft sensor) no signal
looks like I have found the root of the problem. Would these give me the symptoms that I'm getting? Ecu light is also fixed and it was a loose fitting bulb that caused this. Have also just carried out the paperclip test and I get 3 codes - 12 (which is normal) and as above 16, 31. Luckily enough I think I have a spare knock sensor but not a crankshaft sensor will have to look? What does the crankshaft sensor look like and where is it located?

Should the engine be running or not when doing the paperclip test. If so I will nip out and do another one with it running? Also have another strange problem. Once I had put the clocks back in the needle now drops down below the zero mark when the ignition is switched on?

Tried doing that but it kept dropping down to where its at in the photo. Decided in the end to let it settle and removed the needle and replaced it at it's correct position. Seems to be working at the moment? Strange why it done that in the first place?

Managed to get at it. But since doing the paperclip test the fault seems to be the knock sensor and not the amp. Got an amp and a coil on it's way just in case?

Car went into garage and is now fixed and running as it should. It was the knock sensor in the end. The cause? The guy who fitted the alternator trapped the knock sensor wire between it and the block causing a break in communications between it and the Ecu. All's well that ends well
