Problem sorted, Battery charger is broken, part of the charging circuit inside was damaged and reversed the charging polarity. so when the battery was being charged it reversed the batteries polarity hence the damage to the earth cable.

I've heard of this before, just that the battery had the leads put on the wrong terminals and it had charged it opposite, I do believe this is possible with a fully dischraged battery

That's what the auto tech said (my battery was almost dead) then he checked the charger and found the problem.

I had that with a rc car when I was a kid.
Had an old battery, not been used for months and was chatting with a mate when I connected it (the wrong way) to the (cheapie) charger.
Put it in the car for a play, moved the throttle stick to go forwards, and the car shot backwards
