Volt metre reading 12V.....

by Gigabite » Sun Jan 13, 2008 3:08 pm

Hi,

Just put a brand new heavy duty battery in my calibra. The volt metre is reading 12V, could the alternator have gone? Also whats the cost of a new one if anyone knows, and where is it located in the engine? Pictures would be apprichated.

Thanks In Advance.

Im assuming you took that reading with the car running?
If the alternator has gone it's usually about £25 to get it reconed....

Location= if you have a look at the pulleys that run off the crankshaft the alternator is there,it's driven from the crank via the belt(not the timing belt,it will be run off the same belt as the power steering...

an alternator problem should show up with the red ignition light glowing slightly, or brighter when you put on lights heated seats etc, I'm assuming you have the centre dials?

if you do run the engine get someone else to sit in the car then wiggle all the connections to the battery and the earths on the wing and see if this makes any difference to the voltage reading, if it does then it's simply a bad connection somewhere

you can get a new alternator off e-bay look to pay around £65, vauxhall will charge you over £100
