If you have been emptying some oil out, did you see any evidence of water in it too?

Nope I had a good feel too and it didn't feel runny like iv known some engines to when the head has gone, but when I topped the coolant up I did notice a bit of a shimmer in the water so maybe slight oil in there not much but a little, water still leaking from top rad hose too.

Well here are the results top is dry bottom is wet.
Pics are from left spark plug to right.

Ok so just took the other half down to see some family, and on starting it up since I did the test a cloud of smoke came out of the exhaust, is this a good sign?? iv also had the header tank cap off and had the other half revving the car and no bubbles from what I can see but the water does look like its tinged with a bit of oil?

Ok so I took the other half to Asda while she went in I stayed and let the car get up to temperature, once it was upto about 91'c I lifted the bonnet and the top rad hose looked fit to burst it was solid, I carefully unscrewed the header cap i think there was a bubble but not 100% as that was the only slight sign, but after getting the other half to apply some revs there was nothing no little or big bubbles, and the pressurised hose was now squeezable.

Both rad hoses are hot, and the radiator, it is hot but to be really picky it prob not as hot at the very bottom but nothing like the old one was, the old radiator had a huge difference

Do you still think it could be the head or has anyone else got any ideas? Just to throw it out there? May light up a bulb in some else's head too?

What would I need to look for if I decided to take the head off?
Do you still not think it could be thermostat related?
If I was to take the head off I'd prob wait a while get some money together get my self a new timing kit, water pump, and head gasket kit and do it all at once, just having to put up with the problem for a while. How much do heads go for these days? If it's warped or cracked, cheap enough try and pick one up just I case I come across something when changing everything.

Sorry only just noticed you had replied, no we didnt end up doing it, as rich was certain it wouldnt be so told me not to buy one but we bought the rocker cover gasket instead! Which i believe has done the trick of stopping some oil

It leaks when engine is off or cool and I squeeze on the hose but when engine is up to temp and hoses are pressurised it doesn't which is weird

when hot the pipe will expand which might be enough to stop it for a short time
