i've owned many fiats, only ever had one breakdown thatstopped the car running, and could have happened to any car and does, a crank sensor.

not all fiats are bad, infact, alot of current vauxhall diesel engines are fiat engines, the current bravo is an astra/stilo hybrid.

pound for pound, fiats are good cars. looks like you've just been unlucky with your 500 tbh, i know of many 500 owners, none have had any bother at all.

btw, the 500 is actually co-developed with ford ;)

one of my mates has a new punto and to be honest with you i wasnt impressed with the fit and finish of it,rough edges on the door cards where they were moulded, reall cheap plastics mechanicly the engines are fine it is down to poor electrics imo

the new punto is basicly a corsa under the skin.

hands up though, i dont like the grande puntos/evo puntos, i do think they feel a bit cheap inside tbh, never been a fan since they came out. apart from the abarths tbh

as for the electrics, i can confidently say of all my fiats, i've had more electrical problems with the calibra than all the fiats put together

the fiats wouldnt be

the calibra is, but none have been engine related electrical problems as such, its all been lighting issues, sensor issues, interior electrics etc

my fiat electrical casualty list is, fuel guage sender and a melted headlamp plug, both on the same car, and it only cost me £200 so i cant really complain

fiats have an unfair reputaion for reliabilty IMO

most of it isnt the car (not in marks case, that IS the car, ive no doubt), its the owners in most cases though. fiats are bought as budget cars for many. when people buy budget cars, they skimp on servicing, run them into the ground then complain when it breaks and put it down to it being a lousy fiat because of their reputation. they then go and buy a corsa, the exact same happens, they put it down to it just being a bad car they picked and sheer bad luck. "after all, what can you expect for that price?" etc.

a well looked after fiat will outlive many a premium brand that recieves teh same care, generally, they are fairly tough underneath.

having worked with lancia's ...I can tel you that 85% of all problems brought in was due to an electrical fault , great engines and drive train.....just wish they would let someone else do the wiring

and Ferrari ain't much better ...anything Italian has rubbish electrics
