New wireless router?

by Fraz » Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:19 pm

well the old Bt voyager 2100 has died so time for a new one

my ISP has offered a Thomson TG585T 4 port router (so long as I sign up for another year) but from what I have read they are not that great and its a "G" type, now it seems the best type is the newer "N" type

so what would you recommend ?? dont want to pay over £50 (less if I can) and dont really use it for much more that accessing the Internet (no gaming or streaming films etc )

My vote goes for linksys + custom firmware =)
It's a pity you have such broadband in UK. We have lot of offers up to honest 300Mbits. Therefore Wireless N, preferably dual band is a must.

N if you have range issues, otherwise as said G will be pretty much the same. I seem to recall Dabs.com had budget N range for about 30quid,
on another similar note, i had been cut off hence didnt get the renewal, but have been reconnected now on orange (£5 a month as i have orange phone, £10pcm if you dont, and N range router). so payments sent earlier.. any issues give me a squeek :)

Disagree :)
Of course, I understand, most of us here loves 15-20 years old (and older) cars. But I don't think we should stack with old technologies elsewhere. Especially taking into account not too huge difference in prices for G-routers and mid budget N-routers. IMO.

There are two quite similar models - WR841N and WR841ND.
Basically these are same routers, but I suggest ND has slightly better range.
But note that almost every manufacturer has different revisions of same router models.
With regard to WR841ND I recommend to look for revision 7.
More detailed info where to see revision version for TP Link routers can be found here http://www.tp-link.com/en/support/downl ... =TL-WR841N
