Notchy handbrake & Sticking on ?!?!

by MadOnVaux! » Wed May 25, 2011 4:01 pm

My Handbrake has just started having a definite notch half way through pulling it on, and also its sticking on all the time, which i have to run the car forward to get it to release, and it releases with a very loud clunk!

It also isnt holding very well, meaning that unless its pulled up very hard i can reverse it with the handbrake on...if that helps?

Any ideas anyone??

Did mine as i had the same problem, handbrake cable wasnt releasing unless i drove forward, replaced cable, readjusted and all ok. also the adjuster wheel had rusted onto the top part so it wasnt adjusting properly either. Replaced that bit as well

If i takle this myself, how hard/easy is it to do then?

Is it a case of just jaking car up, wheels off, rear calipers off (not really sure how to do that without damaging pipes either) rear discs off.....and will i see what needs doing?

I have no idea what i'm doing rear brake wise at all really...I can change rear pads but thats about it, no idea about handbrake mech either..........and will i need to bleed the brakes afterwards?

Quite an easy job mate, once youve
stripped them down give the adjusters
and hand brake mechanism a good clean
with a wire brush then give them a little
touch of copper grease. When its stripped
down you might as well just renew the
shoes and pads

Well its all abit academic now...as last night the handbrake jammed on as normal, but wouldnt release at all....so it's now in the garage waiting to get done as i need it done asap now.

It was driveable, just was tough going and it stunk like a skunk when i got there....burning brakes, it's a unique smell sure enough ;)

Got it back today, Handbrake cable was fooked, job done :)

I didnt think it could have been any of the handbraker mech as that was near enough all replaced and/or cleaned and lubed last year when i had the new back plates fitted.
