strange noise .....

by BazV6er » Fri Mar 06, 2009 3:00 pm

Went to one of our mini meets last sunday and it was fine but only just noticed a slight tinny noise when you go over bumps....

ive checked the brakes, wheels, wheel nuts, and it appears to be coming from the drivers side

ive jacked it up and had a good luck but cant seem to find any trace of a tin sound.

anybody had this before?

There is a heat shield over the top of the rear exhaust box. That came loose on my old one and was resting on top of the exhaust.

Does it only rattle over bumps or can you make it rattle at a certain engine rpm point with the car stationary??
I used to own this Calibra...

Have a good look around the lower wishbone(take the wheel off).
Check the drop link is ok
Always worth checking the bottom of the coil spring hasnt snapped.

Janes Polo started rattling on bumps, turns out half a coil was jumping around in the spring cup. But didnt effect handling at all.

Try the rear pad retaining springs..

I stood by bumps while my wife drove over them...I had removed all the heat shields and everyting else metal on metal or stuffed it with padding..tracked it down to worn rear pad retaining springs on one side... would never have beleived they could make so much noise...sonded like washers being rattled in a coke tin... Simple test to prove it is drive over bumps at speed you know causes rattle but with left foot on footbrake to partially lock the rear pads..or just replace the retainers.
Wifes cavlier had a deeper rattle when a front coil snapped and loose bit sat in retaining cup... went through the MOT twice with a shorter spring!
