Newbie and his Crok

by dex101 » Sun Aug 02, 2015 11:38 am

Hi all,

New to calibra ownership as of Friday night. My previous car was rotten and engine was on its way out so having found a K reg calibra 16v I scrapped my car and went to purchase it.

Here's a few pics as it is.

On eBay the car sounded great, spoke to the seller and everything looked promising. Unfortunately he didn't mention some things, not really major but for example the speedo is out of a turbo so the speed is completely out (I was doing 140mph round the m25 whilst being overtaken by Kia C'eed...

All the trim was out of the boot, fortunately all the trim was there, apart from the carpet so out all that right yesterday.

The exhaust was hanging low, on inspection this is how it is hanging:Image

Assume it's just meant to be Hannington the mounts on the rubbers?

Wondering if this was done so that it doesn't rattle against something? Can't think why otherwise.

The bloke also mentioned it didn't have a radio which wasn't a problem as had one out of my Last car. Plugged it in yesterday and sound only came out of the tweeters. On inspection there were no speakers in the front or rear. Have ordered some cheap off ebay with adapter plates.

The bonnet will be coming off asap, not only does it look gash, but also been really badly done so has cracked round the vent and also has no rigidity.

Bonnet cable is being replaced as currently has a cable tie attached the the pull under the bonnet to open it.

The bloke said he had just done cam belt, water pump and service, however having flicked through all the receipts there wasn't any for this and on inspection only the air filter looked new. Will be doing all these during the week.

Over all really excited by the car, has lots of potential and the big plus is very little rust! The engine is a coilpack redtop, had thought would be the dizzy engine but doesn't look like it's been replaced, anyone know when the cut off is?

All new brakes all round so stops well. Suspension is ta technix coilovers, not what I want although to be fair the ride is actually more comfy than my corsa was on bilstein shocks and gmax springs!

My plan is to make it more standard, the wheels although very nice and all with new kumho tyres will be coming off abd some alloys that would have been on a calibra will be going on.

Suspension will either go back to standard or might change to lowered shocks and springs.

Will be buying another redtop engine with the idea of rebuilding it to swap over next summer.

Long term plan will be to get it resprayed in a calibra colour although as yet not sure what to go for.
Let me know what you guys think, I know I will be spending hours on here soon!

That's because I couldn't make it there with mine
Actually its not that bad, but it is a 20 year old daily!

If you've bought one then you'll share our view that the Calibra is a pretty good looking car anyway.

It sounds like you've got what you expect: a project car.
The colour looks similar to Ceramic Blue (like Callyman's). Other Blue Calibras were Magnetic, which is a little lighter (SE4, SE8 & some late V6's) & Westminster (I've never seen one but I can recall seeing it listed somewhere).

Welcome to the club.

Adding your location to your profile may help when asking for parts, help etc.

The colour is actually Europa blue (found on the astra coupes) was resprayed by the previous owner.

Love the look of the calibras and personally don't think you can make hugevimprovements on the standard looks.

Wanted a car that was worth spending the money on, looks like this one fits the bill so far!

Yeah that bonnet is awful, will get some close up pictures of it as well as its cracked all the way round. They cut out a hole for it then siliconed in a plate of sheet metal... Doesn't make sense! Plan is to get a new bonnet of any colour as I would rather drive round with a funny colour bonnet than that!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

Small update, last night decided to change the sump gasket as it was leaking oil... everywhere!

Wasnt much fun, ended up covered in oil and gunk literally from head to toe!

here a picture of the sump off.

Image

Gave it all a good clean whilst it was off, only took 3 hours... :bang:

Heres a picture of the Engine bay as well, its a bit cleaner than when I first opened the bonnet!

Image

Tomorrow night is cambelt and water pump as well as some cheap front door speakers (Mac Audio... anyone heard of them?!) ready for trip down to Padstow on Friday
