Project "Bin"

by KERR_SE9 » Thu Aug 14, 2014 12:12 am

Hi folks, nothing too exciting but I picked up a little fixer-upper in the form of a 97 V6 in Mag Blue, she was gonna be scrapped in 2 months when the tax ran out, if nobody bought her, So I couldn't have that! And if I make a couple quid when she's finished I'll be happy.

Got the train down to Greenbank (Manchester area-ish), which is awesome from me, As I hate trains with a passion!
Image
Only bonus was I got into first class for free, can't see the difference myself

After arriving after what seemed like an eternity, I clapped eyes on "bin" for the first time!
Image

I was a little dissapointed, as is the way when you travel to view cheap/old cars, people gloss everything over I feel, to be fair to the guy he was genuine enough, just seen the car through rose tinted specs I assume.

Anyway a deal was aggreed and I was on my way, clenched but cheeks all the way, as the temp was sky high, although she never boiled over or used water, heaters were warm etc,,, thankfully 242miles later she was home.
Image

After a good nights sleep, I quickly set about a plan, giving the car a good going over, also had the bonus of a boot full of spares that's been a nice little earner towards the repair costs.

First thing I had done was a pre-mot as there was no point tidying a car that's beyond an mot.

So for the MOT:-
Adjust handbrake (Cable & shoes in boot-bonus)
O/s/f side repeater not working
Play in steering column (Someone fitted an early tilt column badly)
o/s/f brake flexy ferrule
Centre exhaust rubber (Also in the boot)
2 tyres worn on inside edges (new wheels today anyway)
Clean the rear brakes pipes

Not too bad....

Next I compiled my mechanical list, to make it drive/run as it should, generally make it nicer
*Water temp issue fixed*
*Steering column swapped for original*
*Handbrake* (Part of Mot anyway)
*Fit 2x ARB droplinks as they look tired and new ones in the boot*
*Fit 2x strut top mounts as one jumping and there's a pair, you guessed it, in the boot!!

Then for the interior & bodywork ( I must be mad)

The interior need severe tlc,
*Doorcards cracked bubbled*
*Passenger seat damaged*
*Radio aerial cut off*
*Needs stereo*
*Hole in oil/volt gauges*
*Dash cracked all over aswell as lens for instrument cluster*
*Various cheesy leds in all colours*
*Gearknob broken so sitting with about a 2" gap*
*Both gaitors wrecked and cheesy handbrake*
*Various trims painted blue*

So plan is to remove, clean and return all to standard

Bodywork wise it needs:-
Right hand side blown over as been scratched and badly repaired
*Replace front bumper*
*Replace sideskirts as someone painted them and it's flaking*
*O/s mirror glass flapping about*
*New aerial*

Then it'll get a full de-grease under bonnet/arches and door shuts, full machine polish/full interior valet
~Probably a service too, then hopefully someone will buy her and cherish "bin" forever

"Bin" meets DTM, one day she will look good again

Sure there should be an aerial here:-

This hole will annoy me:-

Under bonnet, after clean pics to follow, selling all bling and returning to standard

True enough, this one should be upto scratch on a budget as I've got most of the parts here, more time than money required

little update:-

Door cards replaced, interior removed for a deep clean and removed dashboard to replace, as lots of incorrectly fitted/broken trim etc...
Wheels replaced with tidy set with 4 new tyres

Plans to refit dash and finish cleaning tomorrow, then a quick rub down and off to the paint shop.

Yeah that's the plan ,car owes very little plus it's all time rather than money, and something to keep me busy between sales.

Right, sorry its been a while, bit of an update on the project,

Got all the mot work done and finished all the interior/trim odds, fitted aerial/mirror glass and de chav'd everything.
Then fitted new wings as old one had been repaired badly in the past, prepped front bumper and right hand side for paint, due to the scratches and lacquer peel.
Took her down for an mot and now she's getting hot again, not gonna let that beat me, so new waterpump, hopefully if not h/g time.

Pretty clean in there, dont worry about flexy, it had a slit and needed replacing

Image
New strut top mount, track rod ends and drop links fitted, also tightened up handbrake, so thats mot taken car of.
Image

Offside paint prep and new wing fitted

Out the paint shop, and looking not too bad!

So basically, some cleaning to do, and sort the "overheating-ish" issue, then onto a new owner.
