Great shame...

by Chavtastic » Mon Apr 06, 2015 9:20 pm

...that nobody seems to want a very tidy, restored Calibra Turbo shell in a rare colour for £150

viewtopic.php?f=41&t=50709

Any theories why? I'm asking only scrap value

If I had a rotten Calibra, or even an average one, I'd jump at the chance of a restored shell for £500 let alone £150.

As for buying it whole, I'd take the line of "if I don't like it I can make money breaking it". It's a win-win situation really, financially speaking.

I'd say it's more the fact, nobody really wants to build a car from scratch, a rolling shell is a lot of work.
I offered you £1200 for the whole lot less the LPG,which is a fair shout for a turbo shell running an 8v with 160+k on it, does look nice and would be a shame to break it but you're obviously gonna do whatever makes the most ££.

It's not had a "quick respray", I have invoices for £8000 of restoration work.

If I wanted to make money off it I'd break it for £2500, it would never even be offered for sale whole or as a rolling shell. I'd like to see it saved. That's why I can't take £1200 Jon as that's half what it will fetch in bits. £1700 is fair, even then I'm missing out on £800 (which I am happy to do)

Problem is though, as I found with the L.E. I had, people aren't willing to even view it, let alone buy it for less than it's worth.

Hopefully it'll go by the weekend though

The price of a car is rarely proportional to its condition.
A really nice example will only usually sell for a little more.. nowhere near what it costs to restore a lesser example to the same condition.

Depends on what the intention is..If it was to sell, then I agree.

I recently spent over £1k on getting an old cycle frame repainted & rebuilt with new components.
It was my bike from new in the 1980's & had a choice of scrap it, sell it, let it rot or rebuild it.
There is no way I will part with it now & I never considered doing so.

I haven't put £8k into it, the previous owner did at a place called Ambassador Coachworks on the South Coast. I have all the paperwork to prove it. Lots of new genuine parts plus a lot of labour in paint and prep etc.

Hence it's a great shame to scrap such a good shell.

Looks like that's what will happen though!

It's not an 8v either, it's a Calibra Turbo shell for sale.

What engine that goes it it will be up to the new owner.

You could fit a free B204 engine which is better than a C20LET for next to nothing (free if you break a Saab)

I'd sell it to anyone who hasn't previously wasted my time.

It's plain to see even from the pictures that the paintwork is stunning, it's better in the flesh. The invoices carry the registration number of the car and a full list of the panels, fixtures, fittings etc that have been replaced. That's why I bought it.

Anyway it looks like I'm wasting my breath here.

I'm on good terms with the best part of 2,000 Vauxhall enthusiasts, because I've always been honest and decent in my dealings with everyone. I run a regular Vauxhall meet and am involved with a forum with a large active member base (migweb).

Yes there are maybe a dozen or so people I've fallen out with, I'm sure it would be the same with anyone who sells so many parts.

What would really suck, is if I were you :)
