Track rod ends and wishbones - pairs?

by MadOnVaux! » Mon May 14, 2012 4:06 pm

I had my MOT in april and i always tell the garage if it needs anything just to do it....and it needed an o/s wishbone and n/s track-rod-end, so they were fitted.

Thing is, now it feels abit unstable at motorway etc speed, it feels like i keep having to correct the steering and it doesnt feel solid......could this be due to them not fitting a pair of the wishbones and trackrods or wouldnt that matter.

also when i am turning in somewhere left on full lock the tyre is catching on something now, where as it wasnt before.

any advice and/or suggestions?

Thanks In advance :)

anytime theres something needed changed on the steering i've always changed both sides at once. it could be that now the opposite sides are now wearing causing the problems with the steering

as above i would always do both sides at the same time and if your track rod end has been done your tracking will need adjusted

I would have said both should be done at the same time really, chances are if one side is worn it wont be long before the other will be too...

honestly it wouldn't be a bad idea, and obviously as the guys have said above it will need re-tracked as well after you get the work done

Might be an idea to replace the whole track rod as the inner part may be seized/rusted and they would have to rebuild it to re track. Saves the garage saying they've done it charge you a fortune and it hasnt realy been done like some main tyre shop did to me after i bought the SE2  Easy enough to do yourself

Big Mistake!!! :naughty:

Never let them do as they please, unless You know them that well...

Always ask them to place the 'Old Parts' in the boot for You...

That's what I did when I replaced the Wishbones, Sway Bar Links and Tie Rod Ends...

Once that's all done, a Wheel Balance and Wheel Alignment is the Final Stage!!!

Well i do know them well and trust them...they wouldnt replace parts unnecessarily.

Plus i found out my wheel spacers were warped and causing my wheels to rotate in a very strange way, so hence when they tracked it, it will have given a false reading....and as i dont need the spacers any more due to having bigger front discs and as such the wheels dont catch on the calipers, i am taking the spacers off.

This Calibra has been an utter ball ache ever since i bought it, but i still love it lol....even though i STILL have the rear knocking!!!! AAARGH!

The car is back after having the n/s wishbone and o/s track-rod-end done.....and well, the steering feels alot better, but the wheel isnt 100% straight, and it feels lighter/easier to turn right, than it does to turn left.

Any ideas now?....I cant see it being anything the garage has done as they are a good garage and this is a simple job....they have re-set the tracking, i'm wondering if it needs a proper alignment somewhere?

May have only set the alignment by only adjusting the one side, that may be why its easier on turning one way

After driving it around for abit, i think both sides are the same, maybe just because the wheel is off abit to the right, it feels easier to turn right?

I have a bloody intermittant clunky knocking coming from the n/s/f now!! and it isnt the ARB link as thats the first thing i checked.

god it just seems like one thing after another at the moment :(

Does this happen only on full lock of the steering wheel?

If so, does it happen when you turn to the left or to the right, or both sides??
